OpenWhispr alternative: Bulbul vs OpenWhispr
By the Bulbul team. Published , updated .
Bulbul is a free, open-source, bring-your-own-key (BYOK) voice typing app for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Bulbul is a focused OpenWhispr alternative for dictation, with Groq speech and cleanup instead of local model management. OpenWhispr offers local or cloud speech plus meetings, notes, and an AI assistant. Choose Bulbul for a straightforward BYOK dictation path on supported desktops and Android; choose OpenWhispr for its wider suite or local workflow. Groq forbids training on API inputs/outputs without your explicit permission and offers retention controls; audio still leaves your device.
Key facts about Bulbul
Bulbul is a free, open-source, bring-your-own-key (BYOK) voice typing app for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.
- What it is
- Hold a hotkey, speak, release, and cleaned-up text is typed into your focused app. Android uses a floating bubble.
- App price
- Free software, no Bulbul subscription or word cap. Groq limits and paid usage still apply.
- License
- GPL-3.0; source at github.com/codedpool/bulbul.
- Platforms
- Windows 10/11 x64; macOS 11+ Apple Silicon/Intel; Linux X11/Wayland; Android arm64.
- Speech and cleanup
- Whisper Large v3 Turbo speech and a cleanup LLM run on Groq with your key; fallback models may change.
- Why hosted
- No local speech-model download, inference workload, or GPU requirement for transcription.
- Setup / connection
- Install, add your Groq key, grant permissions, and connect to internet. No separate Bulbul account; Groq account needed for a key.
- Local data
- History, dictionary, snippets, settings stay in local SQLite. Audio/text still go to Groq.
- Groq privacy
- No model training without your explicit permission; no default inference-content retention, with exceptions and ZDR controls. Audio leaves the device.
- Telemetry
- Anonymous usage statistics on by default, with a Privacy off-toggle; README says these exclude audio/transcripts.
What is OpenWhispr?
OpenWhispr is an MIT-licensed voice-to-text app with desktop downloads for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It lists dictation, meetings, notes, an AI assistant, local speech models, and cloud processing including BYOK.
Why does Bulbul default to Groq instead of local models?
Bulbul makes hosted inference the default so you can dictate without choosing, downloading, or tuning a local speech model.
Local mode makes you host the model: its files, memory, and inference workload are part of your setup. Bulbul puts speech and cleanup on Groq and keeps your device focused on recording and typing. No GPU is required for that transcription path.
OpenWhispr can also use cloud providers. Those modes share the off-device inference benefit. Bulbul differs in its focused default, not in being the only app that can call a hosted model.
How do Bulbul and OpenWhispr compare?
Bulbul keeps the choice focused on dictation; OpenWhispr gives you more workflows and model choices.

Who benefits most from hosted dictation?
People who want voice typing without local-model maintenance benefit from hosted dictation.
- You keep lots of apps open and do not want a speech model competing for memory and compute.
- You use supported modest hardware rather than buying a computer around model inference.
- You prefer a dictation-first setup to configuring a wider notes and assistant suite.
Groq documents a 216x real-time speed factor for Whisper Large v3 Turbo. This is a provider processing metric, not a Bulbul end-to-end benchmark or proof that every local model is slower. Upload time, connection quality, cleanup, service availability, and rate limits still affect when text appears.
When is OpenWhispr the better choice?
Choose OpenWhispr when local speech or its meeting, notes, and assistant features are what you need.
Bulbul avoids the local speech-model memory and inference workload. It still runs an interface, records audio, and uses the network. No comparative battery or RAM savings have been measured here. Fully local speech is the better fit for offline use or a rule that audio must stay on-device; keep cloud cleanup disabled too.
If you choose OpenWhispr cloud mode, compare provider costs and setup rather than treating it as a local-only competitor.
What is the current mobile difference?
Bulbul documents an installable Android APK; OpenWhispr documents an iOS-first mobile project and buildable Android source.
Sources checked October 9, 2026: https://github.com/codedpool/bulbul ; https://github.com/OpenWhispr/openwhispr/blob/main/openwhispr-mobile/README.md. Pricing, models, and releases may change.
Its mobile README says Android native build and release validation are not yet in CI, and personal provider setup is iOS-first. That does not mean Android is impossible. Check current downloads and feature support before choosing.
Does BYOK mean no cost or no cloud exposure?
No. BYOK means your credentials and provider billing; it does not make remote inference local.
Bulbul is free software with no subscription or Bulbul-imposed word cap. Groq has a rate-limited free tier; paid usage is billed to your own provider account. Speech transcription and text cleanup are separate requests, so speech pricing alone is not the whole cost.
Audio goes directly to Groq for speech transcription and text goes to Groq for cleanup, using your key. No Bulbul-owned transcription relay sits in between. History, dictionary, snippets, and settings stay in a local SQLite database. The README discloses anonymous usage statistics on by default, with an off-toggle in Settings > Privacy; it says these exclude audio and transcripts.
Does Groq store my dictation or use it to train AI?
Groq is not permitted to train or fine-tune models on your API inputs or outputs unless you explicitly grant permission or instruct it to do so.

Section 4.2 of the Groq Services Agreement says: "Groq is not permitted to use Inputs or Outputs for training or fine-tuning any AI Model Services or other models, unless explicitly granted permission or instructed by Customer."
Groq says inference content is not retained by default. Reliability or abuse investigations can temporarily log inputs and outputs for up to 30 days, or longer when legally required. Usage metadata is always retained and does not include customer inputs/outputs.
Groq documentation says all customers can enable Zero Data Retention (ZDR) in Data Controls to prevent content retention for reliability and abuse monitoring. The legal agreement refers to eligible customers. Check your account controls and current terms; Bulbul does not automatically enable ZDR, and this is not a promise that no data of any kind is ever stored.
This gives you a privacy-conscious hosted option without hosting the speech model on your laptop. It does not make cloud speech local: audio is sent to Groq and text is sent for cleanup. If your requirement is that audio never leave the device, a fully local workflow still has an advantage.
The general Groq Privacy Policy covers account, website, and usage information; it explicitly directs API Customer Data to the Services Agreement and DPA. These API-specific terms, not a blanket privacy slogan, support this comparison.
Which sources support this comparison?
Product facts were checked against official sources on October 9, 2026. Provider performance is not an independent app comparison benchmark.

Frequently asked questions
Why choose Bulbul over OpenWhispr local mode?
Choose Bulbul to avoid local speech-model downloads and inference in a dictation-first workflow. OpenWhispr cloud mode avoids local speech inference too; its wider feature set may suit you better.
Is OpenWhispr open source?
Yes. Its current README states MIT, free for personal and commercial use. Provider usage and hosted plans are separate from the code license.
Does OpenWhispr work offline?
It supports local speech and other local models. Keep the workflow local if you need no cloud requests; enabling a provider changes that.
Does Bulbul include meeting notes?
Its documented core workflow is dictation and cleanup, not a meeting-transcription suite. OpenWhispr lists meetings and notes.
Is Bulbul the only option with cloud speech?
No. OpenWhispr offers cloud processing and BYOK too. Bulbul makes Groq the focused default and needs no local speech model.
Is OpenWhispr Android-ready?
Its mobile project says Android can be built locally, with iOS the active release target and Android validation not yet in CI. Verify current downloads rather than assuming full release parity.
Does Groq train on my Bulbul dictation?
Its Services Agreement forbids model training or fine-tuning on API inputs/outputs without your explicit permission or instruction. Inference content is not retained by default, but reliability/abuse logging exceptions exist. Review ZDR in your Groq Data Controls. Audio still leaves the device.
