Bulbul is a free, open-source, bring-your-own-key (BYOK) voice typing app for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Choose Bulbul if you want dictation without turning your laptop into a speech-model host. Groq runs speech and cleanup; your device records and types. Handy favors offline speech, FluidVoice favors local Mac dictation, and OpenWhispr offers local or cloud workflows. Bulbul combines a focused BYOK setup with Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android support. Groq forbids training on API inputs/outputs without your explicit permission and offers retention controls; audio still leaves your device.
Key facts about Bulbul
Bulbul is a free, open-source, bring-your-own-key (BYOK) voice typing app for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

The current USD Pro plan is $15 per user per month or $144 per year ($12 per month billed annually). Free dictation has weekly limits. Region, store, and existing subscription pricing may differ; check current pricing.
Which alternatives should you compare?
Compare where the model runs, not just whether the app is free.
- Bulbul
- GPL-3.0 dictation on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Speech and cleanup go directly to Groq with your key; no local speech model to download.
- Handy
- MIT desktop dictation on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Whisper or Parakeet runs on your computer; offline speech is its main strength.
- OpenWhispr
- MIT desktop dictation, meetings, notes, and an AI assistant. Local or cloud models, including BYOK. Its mobile project has an iOS-first release target.
- FluidVoice
- Free GPLv3 Mac dictation for macOS 15+. Local speech includes Whisper, Parakeet, Apple Speech, and other engines; Intel Macs use Whisper. Optional Fluid-1 cleanup runs locally, or you can enable external AI providers.
Why does Bulbul use Groq instead of local speech models?
Bulbul moves model inference off your device so dictation does not depend on hardware that runs a speech model comfortably.
- No local speech-model download: install the app, add your Groq key, and grant required permissions.
- No GPU requirement for transcription: Groq runs the speech model, not your laptop or phone.
- No local speech-model memory or inference workload competing with your other apps.
- One hosted approach on supported desktops and Android. Device price does not choose the model; connection quality still matters.
Voice typing should work on everyday machines, not require a hardware upgrade project. Local models can be excellent on capable hardware; Bulbul removes that model-hosting decision from its default workflow.
How do the alternatives compare?
Bulbul is a focused hosted option; local tools win when offline use or keeping audio on-device is required.

Is hosted dictation faster or cheaper than local dictation?
Hosted speech avoids local inference, but speed and cost depend on your workflow.
Groq documents a 216x real-time speed factor for Whisper Large v3 Turbo. This is a provider processing metric, not a Bulbul end-to-end benchmark or proof that every local model is slower. Upload time, connection quality, cleanup, service availability, and rate limits still affect when text appears.
Bulbul is free software with no subscription or Bulbul-imposed word cap. Groq has a rate-limited free tier; paid usage is billed to your own provider account. Speech transcription and text cleanup are separate requests, so speech pricing alone is not the whole cost.
Local speech avoids a per-request speech API bill after setup. Bulbul avoids asking you to buy hardware specifically for speech inference. Neither is automatically the lowest total cost for everyone.
When is a local alternative the better choice?
Choose local speech if you need to dictate without internet or cannot send audio to a provider.
Bulbul avoids the local speech-model memory and inference workload. It still runs an interface, records audio, and uses the network. No comparative battery or RAM savings have been measured here. Fully local speech is the better fit for offline use or a rule that audio must stay on-device; keep cloud cleanup disabled too.
OpenWhispr cloud mode shares the off-device inference advantage. Bulbul is not uniquely able to call cloud models; its pitch is a focused Groq-first dictation workflow across supported platforms.
Does Groq store my dictation or use it to train AI?
Groq is not permitted to train or fine-tune models on your API inputs or outputs unless you explicitly grant permission or instruct it to do so.
Sources checked October 9, 2026: https://console.groq.com/docs/legal/services-agreement ; https://console.groq.com/docs/your-data ; https://groq.com/privacy-policy ; https://console.groq.com/docs/legal/customer-data-processing-addendum. Pricing, models, and releases may change.
Section 4.2 of the Groq Services Agreement says: "Groq is not permitted to use Inputs or Outputs for training or fine-tuning any AI Model Services or other models, unless explicitly granted permission or instructed by Customer."
Groq says inference content is not retained by default. Reliability or abuse investigations can temporarily log inputs and outputs for up to 30 days, or longer when legally required. Usage metadata is always retained and does not include customer inputs/outputs.
Groq documentation says all customers can enable Zero Data Retention (ZDR) in Data Controls to prevent content retention for reliability and abuse monitoring. The legal agreement refers to eligible customers. Check your account controls and current terms; Bulbul does not automatically enable ZDR, and this is not a promise that no data of any kind is ever stored.
This gives you a privacy-conscious hosted option without hosting the speech model on your laptop. It does not make cloud speech local: audio is sent to Groq and text is sent for cleanup. If your requirement is that audio never leave the device, a fully local workflow still has an advantage.
The general Groq Privacy Policy covers account, website, and usage information; it explicitly directs API Customer Data to the Services Agreement and DPA. These API-specific terms, not a blanket privacy slogan, support this comparison.

Product facts were checked against official sources on October 9, 2026. Provider performance is not an independent app comparison benchmark.

Frequently asked questions
Why choose Bulbul over a local Wispr Flow alternative?
Choose Bulbul to avoid downloading and running a speech model on your device. Its Groq-first workflow supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Choose fully local speech if offline use or keeping audio on-device is mandatory.
Is Bulbul completely free to use?
Bulbul is free software with no subscription or Bulbul-imposed word cap. Groq has a rate-limited free tier; paid usage is billed to your own provider account. Speech transcription and text cleanup are separate requests, so speech pricing alone is not the whole cost.
Does Bulbul work offline?
No. Speech and cleanup run on Groq, so Bulbul needs internet and a working API key.
Is FluidVoice a free alternative to Wispr Flow?
Yes, on Mac. It is free and GPLv3, requires macOS 15+, and runs speech locally. Bulbul adds Windows, Linux, and Android support with no local speech-model download.
Does OpenWhispr support Android?
Its mobile README says Android can be built locally, while iOS is the active release target and Android release validation is not yet part of CI. Check current downloads rather than assuming public Android release parity.
Does Wispr Flow support Linux?
Linux is not among Wispr Flow official platforms in our October 9, 2026 check. Bulbul, Handy, and OpenWhispr list Linux.
Does Groq train on my Bulbul dictation?
Its Services Agreement forbids model training or fine-tuning on API inputs/outputs without your explicit permission or instruction. Inference content is not retained by default, but reliability/abuse logging exceptions exist. Review ZDR in your Groq Data Controls. Audio still leaves the device.
